Description

French Onion Beef Casserole is a hearty and flavorful dish combining tender ground beef, caramelized onions, and melted cheese, perfect for satisfying family dinners or entertaining guests. This easy-to-make casserole features rich flavors with a cheesy, savory profile inspired by classic French onion flavors, topped with melty mozzarella and garnished with fresh herbs for an irresistible meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Fresh thyme or parsley

Instructions

  1. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. In the same skillet, add ground beef and minced garlic. Cook until browned, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add caramelized onions back into skillet with beef. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Cook egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked noodles with beef and onion mixture. Stir in sour cream if desired and transfer to a greased baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for a crispy topping.

Notes

  • Caramelizing onions slowly enhances their sweetness and flavor.
  • You can substitute mozzarella with Swiss or provolone cheeses for different tastes.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or other vegetables for extra texture.
  • For a low-carb version, replace pasta with cauliflower rice.
