Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground chuck or hamburger meat (Ground chuck patties recipes)
  • 8 slices of hearty bread or brioche
  • 8 slices of cheddar cheese or American cheese
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: pickles, mustard, or ketchup for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Season the ground chuck with salt, pepper, and diced onions if using. Form into four equal patties and set aside.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions until caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches by placing a slice of cheese on a bread slice, adding a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another bread slice.
  5. Butter the outside of each sandwich. Grill on a skillet over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Use thick bread like sourdough or brioche for best results.
  • For extra flavor, try adding sautéed mushrooms or peppers.
  • Can be prepared ahead, stored in the fridge, and reheated for later.
